Coastal Kayak Tours

Goat Island is located on Oahu’s northeastern coast and is also known as Mokuauia Island. Contrary to its name, there are no goats on Goat Island, only nesting seabirds. In fact, it's a seabird sanctuary, situated at the southern end of Malaekahana Bay.

The beach located on the north side of the island is a gorgeous sandy crescent studded with coral formations and water shallow enough for kids to snorkel in. The center of the island is covered with high tufts of sea grass that shelter myriad seabird nests. High concentrations of birds can be observed nesting here. The south shore of the island is an enormous tidal shelf dotted by pools and teeming with life. There are sea urchins, sea cucumbers, colorful fish, and crustaceans in abundance. The sandy beach located at the kayak launch site is a great spot for body surfing and kayak surfing. The area is excellent for snorkeling and the reefs here support lots of sea life. Turtles can be seen in this area as well as the occasional basking monk seal. In the winter months Humpback Whales can be observed from the kayaks frolicking off in the distance.

The current can be quite strong here, especially when the tide changes, and there are no lifeguards, so if you’re not used to swimming in the ocean, better stay on land. In addition to strong currents, there may be dangerous rip tides and even though the waves may look small, they can be quite powerful in this area.
